What do I believe?!

Walking through the process of starting a new church has been eye opening. Even on church staff, there are so many things that you take for granted. There is a foundation in place and a tradition of how things have been done. You assess and make changes as needed.

With a new church, there is nothing! It makes me think of the guy who invented the wheel and discovered how to make fire. Can you picture the imagination and innovation that took? Everything we do goes back to the wheel and fire. We stand on the shoulders of giants.

Starting with a clean sheet has been both invigorating and terrifying. It has caused us to really think about our non-negotiables. Part of that comes from church hurt. I'm going to write a blog post on that soon. As people start something new, they often want to guard against what has hurt them in the past. That is a normal and healthy defense mechanism. Unfortunately, this often leads to hurting others.

We have chosen to keep our list of non-negotiables very small. If you do not agree with them, you are not a Christian! I'll post it once we finalize the wording.

We added a document about normative practices so people would know what to expect when they come in. These are not something we divide over, but things we do consider important.

Anything and everything, we will not take an organizational stance on. We want people to come in the door! Most topics that churches put on their websites are extremely sensitive. Divorce. Women in leadership. Homosexuality. Transgender. The love of Christ is better conveyed in person than in writing. We want to talk about these things! We want to talk about them with you!

Are you ready to talk? Shoot me an email!
